Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is an optical instrument used to describe an optical fiber. A time-domain reflectometry pulses of light into the fiber under test series. It also extracts, from the fiber, the light is scattered and reflected back from the point in the fiber the same purpose in a changing index of refraction. (This is equivalent to an electronic time-domain reflectometry measures the reflected impedance of the cable under test caused by the change.) Return pulse strength measurements and a function of time integrated manner, and plotted a function of fiber length. A time domain reflectometer can be used to estimate the fusion splicer length and overall attenuation, including the connector and mating connector losses. It can also be used to find faults, such as rest, and measure the optical return loss.
Apart from the need of specialized optical and electronic products, the OTDR significant computing power and graphics display, so they may provide a significant test automation.
However, the proper equipment operation and the interpretation of OTDR trace is still in need of special technical training and experience. Time domain reflectometry used to characterize the loss and fiber testing instrument length, because they are from the original production that, while the right wiring, storage, and the wound on the drum, install and then editing. In the final installation and testing applications, more challenging, because it can be a very long distance, or in short distance, or have different optical properties of fiber spacing multiple joints together.
OTDR test results are often well preserved in the subsequent fiber failure or warranty claims. Fiber failure can be very expensive, both in the direct maintenance costs, and the corresponding loss of service. Time-domain reflectometry is also commonly found on the system installation failure.
In this case, the reference to install the Optical Variable Attenuator trace is very useful to determine the change. For a critical use of time-domain reflectometer may require an experienced operator who is able to correctly judge the appropriate tool to set and accurate positioning. This is especially so in relation to long-distance telephone, close fitting or connector, or a passive optical network.
