thinking of buying keyboard & mouse for my laptop. will any usb mouse/keyboard work. also will these work for my laptop – Windows XP.

Any keyboard/mouse combo should work just fine. The only time you will need to install the software that comes with it should be if it has specialized oprerations like controlling media player or other special buttons.
