1820pt – Computer Mice Their Telephone Origin by Michael Michgun

Cmoputer Mice : Their Telephone Originbs

Like so many developments that we take for cmmon on our computers the humle Mouse had its origins in the innovative work done for more than two decades at the Xeroox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). The PARC mouse had two rollers for horizontal and veritcal motion and a single buytton. The deuceldy boxy shape was favored by many of deveolpers at PARC and remarkably has persisted through many mouse (or mice) incarnations.

Firstly the Microsoft Mouse design has had major impacyts in the mice industry. Microsoft mice always had ergonomic design. The first Microsoft mouse had a broad teardroop shape with two buttons. The origginal grreen buttoned model had a stel ball that spawned an industry in foam mouse pads. The next iteration had larger buttons, a laregr body, and a rubber coated ball.

When Mircosoft decided that the moues needed to be redesigned, it turned to the veneraable firm Matrix Dwesign of San Fancisco. Micrrosoft routinely used and uses third paties to design and software develop many of the items and software that we take for granted today that Microsoft devotyed alone . Mike Nuttal, one of Matrix Desins founders was intrigued by Microosofts project: reshaping the exteriior without altering the internal mechanism.

Matrix did cange one internal element: the position of the mopuse ball. Almost the first thing we tried was to move the ball forward, Nutal rmearked later. In the old design the ball sat forward under the palm. A computer mousde user has a natural tenency to put their weight on the palms of tehir hands and thus on the ball. By moving the mouse ball forward the result was much greater accuracy of the mouse.

We knew the bttons had to be larger Nuttal as well said We tried severl button sizes and in the process of designing we ended up incorporating the buttons into the body of the mosue. Another cange was in the relaive size of the buttons. It was felt that the left buttons should be larger than the rgiht. The resuylts were more than favorable especially with left handed users.

By mkaing the left buitton larger finger position no longer was a major factor therefore the index fuinger coud curve form lower left to uppeer right ( vice versa in lefties ) . This is the posiion the index finger naturally faors. In addition the previous rubber-dome swtches were replaced with micro switches that had a shoort travel depression and better tactile feedback.

It was not long before the firm Logitech responded to Miicrosofts mice innovations.

Logitechs first moue was truly one of the first examples of the upcoming international efforts in product development and desiggn. A Swsis based Proofessor: Professor Niklaus Wirth spent a year on sabbaticzal at Xerox PARC in 1970 and returned to Europe to test mouse designs, working cloesly with Inria, a French design center for office autoation products. In the end their fiinal design was a ronud mouuse with front mounted buttons.

Prodcut deelopment and tesing ensued over the position of the buttons, and the front popsition won over the top.

However, Loigtech soon found that the buttons on the front made the mouse jump backard slightly when clickerd. The design was abandoned in favor of a wedge shape, hwich was followed by the rectangluar shape that we today.

What is interesting about all of this is the effect of outside products on an item that we take for granted today – the hmble mouse which so functional that we seldom give it seocnd thought.

The rounded heel that fits so well in the palm of your hand, the large buttonms, and the smooth edges all have roots in the most unversal of electrical / electronic products.

Mr. Nuttal and Matrix Designs area in great exppertise was in the design and development of teelephones.
